Milestones Trust supports people with learning disabilities, mental health problems, dementia and complex behavioural needs in Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire. Formed in 1986, it has 60 residential and supported housing services across the area, providing much needed help and support to over 700 people. Its focus is to provide a homely environment, allowing residents to feel relaxed and comfortable, to enable them to live the life they have chosen.

The volunteers from Astra went along to the residential home which is based in Kingswood, Bristol. This home provides care for 15 people in relaxed and homely surroundings. As many of the residents are from the local area, they automatically feel happier and more comfortable.

The support from the volunteers included smartening up the fence panels through painting, re-decorating a couple of rooms, and tidying up the garden.

Matthew Stanley, Senior Account Manager at Astra said ‘ It’s been great to be able to give our time today. Being here at the residential home and meeting some of the residents makes it more worthwhile, as you can really see the difference you are making, and what it means to them first-hand. I’ve been putting my painting skills to good use in one of the resident’s rooms and helping to sort out the garden’.

Tracy Cunningham, Home Manager, who has been working at Milestones Trust for 20 years said ‘It’s great to see the volunteers here today from Astra. By them giving their time, it allows us to concentrate on the job we need to do – providing the excellent support that the residents need to enable them to have fulfilling lives.

She went on to add ‘ there’s always work to be done whether it be decorating, gardening, or just general maintenance. We also have specific volunteers throughout the Trust who regularly do things such as taking residents to Zumba classes; or simply taking residents out for a walk and a chat. The volunteers’ support is so greatly appreciated. I’d like to say a big thank you to Astra for their work today.’
