Astra signs up to Mental Health programme to support employees.

Astra Security has committed to support Mental Health Programme 'Time to Change' as part of its Health and Wellbeing campaign for staff

Time to Change is a growing social movement working to change the way we all think and act about mental health problems. Attitudes and behaviours towards people with mental health problems need to improve and through making this commitment, Astra is making a positive step. With over 1400 organisations already involved, supporting over 3000 employees, the programme is making great progress.

The facts relating to mental health are staggering:-

  • 1 in 4 British workers are affected by conditions like anxiety, depression and stress every year
  • 9 out of 10 people who experience mental health problems say they face stigma and discrimination as a result.
  • 60% of people say that stigma and discrimination are as damaging or more damaging than the symptoms of their mental health problems.
The Time to Change Programme is helping to change attitudes in the workplace as it can be really hard to open up about mental health at work.  The Programme is backed by national mental health charity Mind.

What will the programme mean for staff at Astra Security?
By signing up to the programme, Astra will be making its own Pledge to put in place best-practice interventions and policy to help staff work in ways that promote a positive mental wellbeing. This will involve committing to a 12-month Employer Action Plan focussed on the principles of the 2017 Thriving at Work Report.  And, to support the Action Plan a number of Workplace Champions will be needed to get the programme off the ground – they’ll help create opportunities to start up conversations about mental health in the workplace, dispel myths, and make it easier for their colleagues to seek help and support.

Paul Beet, Managing Director at Astra Security said ‘It’s so important that we try to change attitudes and behaviours towards people affected by mental health.  By signing up to this programme, we can hopefully make a difference.  Simple steps like making the time to check in with colleagues to find out how they are, listening and not judging and making sure that everyone is treated the same way will have a positive impact, and could make a big difference to somebody’s life’.

This programme is part of a wider commitment to colleague Health and Wellbeing at Astra Security, who already have several initiatives in place including the Cyclescheme; Fruit Boxes; Flexible working and a lunchtime running club.
