Astra providing deep sea cameras to track manta rays in the Maldives!

The Republic of Maldives has the world’s largest known population of manta rays, with an estimated 5,000 individuals, making it also one of the most intensively studied areas too!

Research recording and identifying key patterns within this population over time not only improves our understanding of these animals, but it also helps inform for their on-going management and protection. The vast number of these amazing animals attracts huge numbers of tourists with diving and snorkelling in mind. However, the impact of this intense tourism is increasingly affecting the manta population and their habitat. Research is therefore imperative.

Steve Rees, Senior Project Manager at Astra said, ‘This is such an interesting and exciting project to be involved with. We were approached to supply and develop an underwater camera system, which captures high definition video footage of the manta rays as they swim across the camera’s field of view. The specialist equipment can work down to a depth of 50 metres. The additional benefit is that the researchers can then easily retrieve the footage for studying and archiving using a laptop, all making it simple to use.’

The camera equipment is housed in a polycarbonate housing and able to work at a depth of 5O metres.

Paul Beet, Managing Director at Astra Security said ‘ It’s not the kind of request you receive very often, but we want to make sure we can deliver what’s needed for our clients.  To be able to deliver a camera system which can work in challenging surroundings and to support research in this way is fantastic.’

Astra Security are specialists in handling multifaceted initiatives and developing custom made solutions to fit each client’s needs. They have a strong reputation for delivering outstanding customer service, from designing the initial project to being available to their customers once everything has been installed.
